The achilles tendon attaches the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles to the calcaneus bone in the ankle. Achilles tendon ruptures often occur after a sudden acceleration, forceful jumping, or pivoting motion. The risk for this injury is higher for individuals over the age 40. The tendon rupture is graded in severity ranging from a grade 1 partial tear to a grade 3 complete tear. Refer to the images below to see examples of each injury grade.
